Colpach - Castle and park

The castle is nicer from the back

The Griff - also on the coat of arms of the Marche family, builders of the castle

The castle became a cultural centre when the family de Marches acquired it, but mainly when Henri-Édouard de Marches (1820-1873),
first lieutenant of the hussars of Ferdinand de Saxe-Cobourg and his wife, Marie-Anne Cécile Papier (1845-1915) were the owners.
They invited the Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900), who married the wife after the mourning year for the husband passed.

Memorial placques

Franz Liszt was here several times, last time shortly before his death (he actually gave his last piano recital in the Luxembourg Casino the 19th June 1886)

The placque of Munkacsy is barely legible
Other damous guests included László Paál, another painter and friend of Munkacsy, Endre Hubay, the renowned violinist and Lajos Haynald, a cleric with an interesting fate - legitimist during the 1848-49 war of independence, then opposing Franz-áJosef, the emperor but received in Rome where he again was in opposition during the first Vatican Council.

The castle is not in a good condition, it cannot be visited, I could just peek inside

The Park
After the death of Madame Munkácsy-Papier, in 1917, Emile Mayrisch, magnate of the European steel and iron industry, head of ARBED, now, after several mergers, Arcelor-Mittal, bought the castle and had it embellished in eclectic style with Sosthène Weis, then also state architect of Luxembourg. He and his wife, Aline Mayrisch, a women's rights activist, acquired many valuable sculptures

Aristede Maillol: Pomona
goddess of fruit trees, gardens and orchards, dressed up because the photo was made in the month of fight against breast cancer

There is a vegetable garden also,
with some sculptures

Young Somali by Georg Kolbe

The realisator, statue over the tomb of Emile Mayrisch, by Despiaux
It is not usual in Luxembourg to bury someone outside an official cementery but on the wish of Emile and Aline Mayrisch, they were buried in the park

The death of the last Centaur by Atoine Bourdelle
The last Centaur, Chiron taught ethics, music, and medicine to many mythic Greek heroes, had friendships with humans, and was one of the few centaurs celebrated for wisdom and kindness. When wounded accidentally by a poisoned arrow of Heracles, he brought his suffering to an end by exchanging his own immortality for the mortality of Prometheus. Autumn is nice in the park
There is a lake,
a creek

and also wooden sculptures
and nice wooden benches

The open air movement therapy area

A new wing was built, to which the patients were moved in 2010.

The new wing

Aline Mayrisch left the castle to the Red Cross. From 1954, it is a rehabilitation home.
The building cannot be visited, allegedly a permission can be sought to visit the library, the only part remaining intact. Gossip has it that renovation will start next year.

Two sculptures (take time for yourself and self-consciousness) of Tom Flick are facing the entrance and the therapy area

In the neighbourhood

Mussrooms in the grass

In the valley: the village

Opposite the park, there are cows - calves outside

I hope you enjoyed this little walk in Colpach
